Hello!
My name is Millie.
I’m an Education major studying English and Writing arts at Rowan University. I’ve lived in the little town of Glassboro my entire life and I’m starting to get antsy. I have a twin sister (I’m 33 minutes older) who is a wonderful hair stylist, and a younger sister who lives in Spain. I am one of ten grandchildren in my family, and have been blessed to have my great-grandmother (98 years old!) around for my 22 years of life. My family is broken into West Virginians and New Yorkers and those two sides come together in Delaware every summer.

I’d never been big on writing until I started college. I’ve always struggled with grammar and putting my ideas down on paper in a nice coherent… “flowy”story or essay. I know that I want to write fiction, I’ve grown up with fiction woven in and out of my memories, childhood, and young adult life. I was raised on Disney movies (the classics), 60’s – early 90’s music, and books galore! You will find James Taylor, Elton John, Billy Joel, and Jim Croche along with Mumford & Sons and all Disney songs on my Pandora playlist. On my bookshelf is Harry Potter, Pride and Prejudice(along with many re-writes and play-offs), Peter Pan, and Lord of the Rings. I am an avid movie watcher and can re-watch a movie countless times. My cousin and I have a knack for memorizing scripts and movie scores and when we get together, it is like we’re your personal IMDB site.

The Fiction that has always been a part of my life is what makes me want to write. The stories that I can’t forget, the fairy-tales that have flown me to different worlds, the characters who have taught me life lessons, and the music that is always playing in my mind, make me want to create new worlds and ideas to join that history. The escape that fiction has given me, I want to create… not only for myself, but for others. I can think of numerous times in school where reading a Harry Potterbook allowed me to escape from bullies; or when a song made me stop and just listen and forget about everything else. This is why I want to write… not only write but write well!

So as far as my technological writing self, for the most part, I’ve stuck with the old school, books and movies. If I had to write I preferred to do it on a pen and paper, but since I’m writing this intro out on a laptop, I must include the more advanced technologies in my life. Since starting college, I prefer to write on a computer: it’s faster, easier to save than a piece of paper, and easier to edit. I can type out an idea faster than I can write it and erase that idea and fix it as many times as I like, not having to worry about erasing a hole in the paper. I like Facebook, and use it daily (come on, who doesn’t?). As a writing space, Facebook (for me) lets you jot down thoughts, favorite lyrics, pictures, and interact with friends who may or may not be interested in the same. I have recently started using twitter and am still getting the hang of it; 140 characters isn’t a lot! Although, I have discovered that you can post a link that leads to a blog that holds more than 140 characters… which is much nicer. As you may have noticed from this post… I can’t do anything in 140 characters (thank goodness this isn’t Twitter).  Tumblr is another technology that I use: pictures, lyrics, quotes, writing pieces, or anything can be found on Tumblr and you can choose the blogs you want to follow and see on your Dashboard. I think it is amazing that these technologies, and so many more, are such a big part of our lives. Seven years ago, I had never heard of Facebook and now I check it daily. It’s scary/interesting to see how technology will continue to change the way we write and read.

Phew!
That was a lot.
